July 2026
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

And then of course we wanted to check out the lake progress. Topsoil Mountain is being hauled away, truckload by truckload.

Rascal always waits for her chance to race to the creek for awhile.  This time she couldn’t get back to us except by climbing right up the side of the Mountain, so she did! She was so tired when she got to the top – I don’t think she moved the rest of the time we were there!

Josh got the semi driver to honk at us :)

We went swimming at Uncle Jerry’s for an hour or so (it was hot -  upper 80s and humid), and on the way back there were three cars parked along Allentown Road watching construction… or so we thought. As we got closer, we saw this earthmover on its side! We went on home to get the camera, and came back to take a few px from the cabin lawn. Uncle Harley was watching too; he said it had been completely flipped over, with all four wheels up. Thankfully the operator wasn’t injured or killed (in cutoff peach shirt in the pic). I know I for one will continue praying for safety for the workers on this project – some of the things they have done have made me nervous, and I guess with good reason. It can be dangerous work. One of the earthmovers has a glassed-in cab, but this one did not. Later, Jacob told us he had seen it happen – not the actual machine rolling down the side of the dam, but he was walking home to eat and do chores, and heard something as he was at the end of the lane, kind of behind the topsoil pile. He looked back over his shoulder to see the machine’s wheels showing over the top of the dam, if I understood his description correctly.

Anyway, we continued on with our afternoon and walked down again with Dad after supper.  It looks basically the same as yesterday; the dam is getting higher and wider, and the hill is getting smaller.

P1100935

The kids had a ball driving/walking/running on the dam.

Some of the men climbed straight up the side of the topsoil pile, no easy task when the dirt is always moving under one’s feet!

P1100941

The dirt trucks have barely made a dent in the topsoil pile!!
