July 2026
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

Life Lately

An evening at Grandpa & Grandma Kaiser's.

A Very Cute Child ๐Ÿ’—

(and a very sweet great-grandma)

Steiner Wiener Roast a few weeks ago.

Wednesday.

Time for winter projects to begin -

But still a few nice days left too.

Glad that Grandpa's feeling better.

๐Ÿ’—

๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—

U. Jeff was here last week. He easily beat Ben in an apple peel eating contest. We made a few gallons of dried apples which we are now enjoying.

Another Wednesday.

More dried apples. Not sure if A. Sarah was racing someone or just practicing.

Pasture walk.

Three Schmidgall boys were pretty happy to be buried in the sandbox.

Time for some deep cleaning.

Stay tuned for the after px...

Nice sight and sound. I don't see this much anymore but I sure like it when I do.

And that's about it for this time. Can hardly believe it's almost November. The days fly by.

Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

Teriyaki Steak Kabobs

So it's time for a recipe to remember again. It's been awhile.

This is a new old recipe. Old as in we've been making the teriyaki steak for years but new because recently I've made these fun little kabobs using the same teriyaki marinade. For this batch a few weeks ago, I did some of both just because I could.

Teriyaki Steak -

Kabobs -

For the teriyaki marinade, combine 1 part each soy sauce, honey, and canola oil; whisk well. Coat meat for awhile. I usually prep the meat in the morning for the evening meal but a couple hours works also. For a 3-4# roast, use 1 cup of each ingredient.

For the kabobs, use whatever vegetables you prefer. If you use potatoes, they need to be boiled a few minutes first (10m or so) or they will not be cooked through. Also. Although the baby tomatoes look nice, I won't do them again. Well, for one thing I don't like them, and for another thing they smush into nothing when they're removed from the skewer and Dad didn't like them. Our favorite vegetables are peppers, onions, and potatoes. In my book, that's all you need. If I had mushrooms on hand (which I didn't) I'd add them for Dad. Also it seems like I maybe seasoned the vegetables with a few spices but I can't remember for sure. How's that for a complete recipe? ๐Ÿ˜ Good thing this isn't a cooking blog! But next summer I'll be glad to have these notes here because I'm pretty sure I won't remember what I did. I'm that way.

Grill steak as you would any steak; discard marinade.

A few hints on grilling kabobs:
Pre-heat grill to about 375d.
Cooking time will depend on the size of meat chunks; on average, 8-10 minutes total is about right, turning halfway through. Also, be sure not to turn them too quickly; if meat is still raw, it will stick to the grill and skewer might pull out.

That's it. Enjoy!

Goodbye Puppies

Last week just flew by.
I thought with puppies gone life would slow down a little, but I quickly found out that's not the case. With Sarah and Jewel working 2 mornings a week and Sarah mowing for Dad on Thursdays and Fridays, I'm doing more food prep than I used to. They used to help me do home ec for an hour or so every day at lunchtime, but that has pretty much disappeared as their studies fill up their non-working time. So. While I'm doing less and less homeschooling, I'm doing more and more homemaking. And it's alright. It's different, but not bad different. Just different.
So yeah. The week flew by. Here's a peek.

Way back to the Thursday evening before last week.

Beautiful Friday morning.

Last day with all eight. This might be the last picture with all eight.

Jenny brought her girls over to see the puppies after school. Emmy wasn't sure at first.

A. Sarah said goodbye to the puppies also.

Count 4 (four) puppies on her lap. It was amusing. Puppies kept climbing onto the heap.

I think she ended up with six puppies before the bottom one realized she couldn't breathe and wiggled loose, thus upsetting the whole pile. Cecily got braver and ended up carrying a few around. I'm glad when kids like puppies. It's fun to see them start out a little hesitant and then grow bolder - - - sometimes the pups have to get a little more tired before kids get a little more bold though!

By Saturday night we only had two left. All others left happily with their new owners.

๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ’—

Four heifer calves all cute and healthy (we won't talk about the twin that didn't make it ๐Ÿ˜“).

Sunday afternoon. Last pup to be carried away. Scarlett seems pleased with Rudy.

And... no.
I don't miss the puppies.
They were getting too adventuresome and had turned into escape artists. I felt like a prison guard constantly watching for breakouts. It was time they moved on.

Sunday evening Levi's came for supper. This is the only picture I got. I don't remember what the kids were watching.

A few Tuesday scenes -

Wednesday Roxy came for lunch. But I got no px, shame on me.

Can't remember Thursday. Nothing unusual I suppose.

On Friday, Echo met us at Grandma's porch window and kids got to say hi. Grandma also got to meet Jasper.

We went on to have a picnic and play at the park. It was a beautiful day, not too hot and not too cold.

After we got home, Josh spent some time with Jesse in the combine. He got to be the favorite uncle when Lucy brought Jason out.
Thanks Lucy for the picture๐Ÿ’œ

And that's it for this time around.
