July 2026
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

9-28-13 Apple Crisp

This is one of our favorite fall desserts, if not THE favorite. Healthy it is NOT, but it is absolutely delicious and so easy to make.

P1350130

Place 10 cups peeled and sliced apples in 9x13 pan.

Mix 1 1/2 cups flour, 2 cups sugar, and 2 dashes salt. Cut in 2 sticks cold butter. Spread over top of apples.

Sprinkle with cinnamon.

Bake 375 for 40-45 minutes.

Wonderful – especially served warm with ice cream!

[not according to Jesse. Jesse says it’s slimy when warm and won’t eat it. He prefers it cold with no ice cream.]

#4’s calf isn’t getting much milk from her so the boys have been feeding it milk replacer. It’s doing fine but will be easier to care for in a calf hut. #4 will be sold soon.

9-27-13 Tori’s Take

by Tori

Monday was busy with an ortho. appt. for Kate and errands in Pekin, as well as a new used car from Tremont Car Connection. We also did school and then combine and semi rides in the evening. Tuesday was singing at Restmor in the morning, a trip to the library, then McDonalds for lunch. Tuesday evening Chamblisses brought Skeeter over. Wednesday was just regular work and school, as well as working with the horses in the afternoon. On Thursday I babysat at Rassi’s and I’m not sure what went on at home. Friday Mom and I went to Cato in Washington and then to Morton for lunch and other shopping. We had just pulled into the Walmart parking lot when I realized my purse was still at Cato. I drove back to Washington while Mom did her shopping and a half hour later I was back to Morton with my purse, which I will be getting a strap for. Friday afternoon Kate and I worked the horses again (of course) and in the evening we played music at Restmor. After Restmor we had ice cream at Culvers. Culvers had three school busses of kids from a cross country meet, so we had to wait for our ice cream. The manager even came out after the kids left and apologized for our wait. He said that the kids had totally wiped out their custard which is why we had to wait.

Some pics. Diamond and Skeet. You can see that Skeet is bigger than Diamond.

Skeet and Grey had a little squabble. Grey was incessantly nipping at and biting Skeet and finally Skeet just turned and kicked out at Grey. A few minutes after that Grey went and laid down. I’m not sure if he even hit him but now Grey is quite scared of Skeet. His barn and buddy sourness has gotten way worse. He won’t eat unless Diamond is next to him, and he hates sharing the barn with Skeet, even in separate stalls. BTW we were not near them when they were kicking but went in and caught them both afterwards because we weren’t sure if Skeet would be nice to Grey after kicking him.

9-26-13 Skeeter

by Kate

We have been looking for a new horse because Grey is getting very old. We found a horse on the Tradin’ Post. The owners were the Chamblisses (the same people we got Diamond and Grey from). We went to look at him last Thursday and decided to buy him. He is very friendly and loves people. It didn’t work to bring him over until Tuesday evening. He is 8 years old and very lazy. He wasn’t ridden much over the summer.

You can see his nose out of the first mesh window.
