Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

7-11-11 Help!

Does anyone have any ideas as to why these strawberry plants are dying one by one??? A cutworm perhaps? Disease? Tori googled it for me last week and didn’t find out anything.

A couple of weeks ago all the plants were like this: healthy, strong, growing fine, lots of blossoms which we have been removing so as to facilitate more spinning. These are ever-bearing berries.

For the past week or so - robust on right, dying on left.

Note bare spots where plants were growing and thriving up until about a week ago. Dying plants are in center of picture, to left of center, and right center.

What is going on????!!!!!!!  Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

    Hi Ruth,
    I don't know the answer, but here are some possible culprits from others who've had same problem --

    black root rot, a disease which often appears in late summer. --http://msucares.com/newsletters/pests/infobytes/19960904.htm

    Check for vine weevil, they can also make the plants wilt and die. Look in the soil around the roots, they are little off white bugs curled in a horseshoe shape with brown heads. And I don't know if anyone has tried this but I read somewhere that as weevils can't swim that if you put your greenhouse staging in cups of water and keep them topped up then your staging will be safe and weevil free

    I dug up all my strawberry plants today- red spider mite- so beware all.
