July 2026
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

1-20-15 FINE!

Can you believe we’re on the downhill side of January? That longest of cold dark months is almost over. Although for me at this stage of life, when my baby is almost six years old *gasp*, this longest of cold dark months is not nearly as long and cold and dark as it was when I had little ones that couldn’t spend all afternoon outside. But for you moms with little ones who can’t spend all afternoon outside – let me climb on my soapbox for a minute - send them out for a time every day anyway. Even on a day like today where it’s gray because the sun is hiding, it’s too warm to ice-skate (rink is pretty soft), there’s no snow for sledding, and it’s too wet to do anything much anywhere, that diversion and excitement (instigated by you, Mom!) of going outside to swing or ride a tricycle or draw with chalk or whatever is a good thing to do. That fresh air and exercise is invaluable, even if only for 15 minutes. Colds and coughs? Unless they’re miserable or feverish or it’s dangerously cold, send ‘em out anyway. Can’t leave baby? Stick him in a snowsuit and pull him in a wagon. You’ll be glad you did. And hot chocolate is always better after a cold romp outside.

Anyway. Off soapbox.

Time for a little catchup of life lately. For the record.

The first week of January found Jesse in Arkansas with ACWR building houses destroyed by tornadoes there. He had a good week and didn’t want to come home but had to because he had to start his last semester at ICC. We were glad to have him back because we missed him.

The second week of January (last week) found Levi in Arkansas doing the same thing. He had a good week also and didn’t want to come home but duty calls so he dutifully came home. We were glad to have him back because we missed him.

The second week of January also brought us two of U. Jerry’s fine carpenters who put in seven new doors and trimmed out two bedrooms and the hallway. Everything looks wonderful, and we are eagerly awaiting new carpet (next week) so we can put everything back in place and call this project done.  Only one more project to go…

School is going fine. Kids are learning a lot, although oft times I’d like to see them learning more diligence in some areas. Sometimes distractibility runs rampant and I get frustrated. Bad me, but bad them too. We all have work to do. Especially me.

College is going fine.

Kids’ and Tim’s jobs are going fine.

My job is going fine. I enjoy it a lot.

Health for all has been fine. A few runny noses/coughs a few weeks ago, but nothing to slow anyone down. Thankfully.

Life lately has been, in a word, routine.

And that is FINE!!!
