July 2026
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

8-25-12 Adam’s Falls

Saturday morning we headed out to hike to Adam’s Falls. First we stopped to check for trout at the Colorado River which is about half a mile from our cabin.

P1230546

It was another beautiful day.

P1230547

And we’re off!

P1230550

Adam’s Falls from the viewing deck.

P1230558

Blazing our own trail to the bottom of the falls. It was steep – and great fun!!!

P1230563

At the bottom.

P1230571

P1230572

Yep - I crossed it too!

P1230573

While the older kids rock-hopped, Josh was pleased as punch to throw rocks in…

P1230577

and get a bit wet in the process!

P1230580

Another log bridge to cross.

P1230585

Dad even made it!

P1230588

Lunch back at the cabin.

P1230605

P1230607

After lunch, heading to another trailhead, we saw our first moose.

P1230610

We started off on the Big Ditch trail, knowing it was strenuous and 3.8 miles one way, but not realizing just what “strenuous” meant. It was a beautiful trail, lots of rocks and lots of incline…much more than we bargained for. Once again, we crossed the Colorado River.

P1230612

Once again, trout were examined closely.

P1230613

P1230617

Steep trail – lots of rests!

P1230623

P1230625

This is about how it was most of the way.

P1230628

We took another break at this great creek.

P1230631

Levi did a great job describing the trail to us and also letting us know bits of history of the area from our trusty Rocky Mountain guidebook.

P1230636

P1230637

P1230638

P1230639

Another rest – I think this was after we met a lone hiker coming down. He said we were the first people he’d seen in three days. And he also said we had an hour and a half to the top, and it got steeper!

P1230649

P1230650

Soon after meeting him, we decided we were not in shape to finish this hike. We could only go a little ways before we had to stop to rest. Strenuous means STRENUOUS!! We turned around and spent awhile at Opposition Creek, enjoying the mountain stream and forest.

P1230656

Some of us were tuckered out!

P1230657

P1230659

Back at the cabin - - -

P1230663

Sun Valley Ranch used to raise Alpacas. They have a few left now which are very cute and fun to feed.

And that’s it.
