July 2026
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

Life Beyond The Pictures February 2021

Over a decade ago, this blog started as a journal with pictures and kids' school writings; it then kind of morphed into a scrapbook, primarily consisting of pictures and a few recipes sprinkled in. For some time I've meant to include journaled updates but somehow have just never done it. I'd like to continue this going forward, but we'll see how that plays out...

This was my contribution to the Steiner Connection for this month, sent to our wonderful editor AB just this past Monday. It's an update on life as well as a record for me of what life is like beyond all the pictures I post and write about.

So here we go - - -

Hello Steiners. Hope you’re all enjoying this arctic experience. We are thankful for a warm house and safety for those traveling; so yes, I for one am enjoying it. That would be vastly different if I had to go somewhere today; but thankfully I don’t. We enjoyed a wonderful week in Florida, complete with seeing Troy and June and family randomly on the huge Siesta Key Public Beach. Was fun to say hi. Now the long haul until spring; well, March is only a couple weeks away, so spring will be here soon. Kids are settling into school routine, and things are finally slowing down after our unusually hectic December/January. December is of course traditionally busy with holiday plans; but with Dad and U. Dan passing and all the extra activity with that, I could hardly catch my breath. But God is faithful, and now that’s past, and all that’s left is to pick out a headstone for Dad’s gravesite. Sometimes it’s hard to believe he’s gone, just like that. And U. Dan. I think of them both often… but not to wish them back, oh no. They are in such a better place it’s not even fathomable. Thanks to all who came to help us celebrate Dad’s victory. Was really good to visit with all who could come; those who couldn’t were missed. Tim’s folks have had a few *minor* health issues (as if anything is minor when one is 87 or 90); they’re doing ok though and we’re thankful. They’re planning to move to Chestnut Place in a few weeks so they’ve had a busy winter emptying closets and storage rooms. We’ve inherited some nice heirlooms… they kept a lot of things from their childhood so it’s been a walk through history as they’ve pulled things out. Kate and Ben are doing online school again, and that seems to be going well. They were able to go to FL with us and spent enough time on the beach (interpret: sunburn) in spite of their zoom classes and homework. Jacob was able to work overtime the week before our trip and he too went with us. Tori spent the week here alone; she couldn’t go with us as she was returning north from the work team as we were heading south. Actually we got a quick hug as we met her (and Charity (Koch)) at exit 41 at Staunton IL around midnight. Then we continued south and she continued north and that was that. Speaking of Tori, she is excited to be buying a house in the next few months. She is buying Jesse/Lucy’s house because they are excited to be purchasing a house on Hinman Road, just around the corner from Levi/Echo. For you home folks – it’s the old Heckel (Heckle?) stomping grounds that we grew up farming. And speaking of Jesse/Lucy, they gave us the best Christmas gift ever when they told us that Jason will be a big brother in July! Sarah, Jewel, and Josh keep trucking on with school and work. Sarah and Jewel work a couple days a week at 360 – Sarah in production and Jewel in accounting. Sarah does quite a lot of babysitting also. She never seems to tire of it. And that’s about all the news I can think of and I think it’s enough for one time. I look forward to hearing from you all.

And that's that, except I realized after I sent this news to AB that I forgot to share the most important news of all: we were blessed and grateful to rejoice with Sarah and Jewel (and Grace and Wesley) as they gave their public confession of faith and were baptized a few weeks ago. Idk how I could forget that special weekend, but I really did. We praise God for His work in their lives and look forward to how He will use them as they grow in Him.

Hoverboard and More

More hoverboard use. If you're considering getting one - go for it. This thing has been loved and appreciated by many. Although. If you don't want mashed carpet - don't get one. We don't live in a museum; we live in a house, but man, this hoverboard is hard on carpet. So be it. We live in a house and the goal is joy - not nice carpet. If smiles indicate joy - this hoverboard adds it!

The smile is there - she's trying to hide it thoughπŸ’—

Seems like this was a Monday night when Jesse & Lucy's power was off for repairs...

Good times helping Grandma learn how to facetime.

Cold days call for drastic measures.

And salted caramel hot chocolate πŸ˜‹

Josh discovered that balloons will remain trapped in the hot air current from the woodburner. My nerdy physics kids can't explain it and really I don't think I care. It's cool regardless.

Who needs toys? Grandma's cupboards are much more fun 😍

One afternoon we had Levi's three here, and I needed a nap so laid down with Flint. I fell asleep before he did and found this when I woke up.
Precious
😍

Winter projects keep Josh busy creating when his schoolwork and jobs are done.

A walk one day this week was beautiful with brilliant blue skies...and sunshine! Yes. This week has been sunny almost every day. It is beautiful. But cold. We're still ready for spring.
And Florida πŸ˜„

And last night we had a few cutests here awhile.

Kiowa left to get some books just before I took the picture, but she was a major contributor to this impressive junk house.
"That's not junk," she says. Well, right, but that's what they've always been called around here. I don't really know why; I just know that it's so.
And another shout out to a good toy to invest in - Duplos. Or, as they're called around here, Legos. Real Legos are called Little Legos. Whatever. Just get lots of both. Duplos and Legos. Especially Duplos. They are timeless and ageless. Meaning they will never go out of favor with kids, and kids (and moms)(and grandmas) never really outgrow them. I was playing too until Kiowa asked me to read her some books.
Gladly, Kiowa. Gladly.

So that's it.

Winter Wonderland

I don't remember dates of this snow, but a couple inches of snow on the ice made for a beautiful headache, the likes of which Grandpa Kaiser said he'd never seen before - - and he's 90! We've all seen ice storms, and snow on branches, but this stayed around for a long time - a week or so which was the unusual part. My, but it was beautiful though. Thankfully we never lost power again although some places did.

So these px of horses were taken by Kaitlyn when she and Jewel did a winter ride. Truly beautiful.

Not sure why Diamond didn't merit a picture - clearly they like Skeet best lol.

Back to my camera.

Several good afternoons of 4wheeling. I think it was during this time too that the kids went skating a few times at the Kochs'. Thankful for good friends who share their rink.

Finally the road cleared enough for a walk. Grandpa said the snow/ice stayed so long because we had no sun for about a week; even with cold temperatures, sun will melt ice/snow. Whatever the case, we missed the sun greatly.

Yep it was beautiful but Idt anyone was sorry to see it go. We're ready for spring around here... or Florida...

U. Dan

Daniel C. Steiner Jr, 82, of Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Tremont, IL passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at Holy Cross Hospital.

Dan was born on January 16, 1938, in Tremont, IL to Dan C. and Sophia Pflederer Steiner. He married Shirley Gudeman on January 28, 1962. She survives.

Also surviving are 3 children, Diane (Alex) Paton of Colorado Springs, CO, Mark (Jennifer) Steiner of Chicago, IL, and Dale (Pamela) Steiner of Grayslake, IL; 8 grandchildren, Sophia (Quinn) Joganich, Hannah (Simon) Baidya, Olivia Paton, Jessica Steiner, Matthew Steiner, Natalie (Bryce) Wegman, Rebecca Steiner, and Amanda Steiner; 2 great grandchildren, Peter and Lena Joganich; 5 siblings, Barbara Wagenbach, Joe, Harold, Velma Rinkenberger, and Carol Gress; and numerous nieces and nephews who dearly loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Richard.

Dan served his country in the Army from 1957 to 1959.

He owned and operated Tremont Counter Tops, Inc. for nearly 30 years. Dan was on the Board of Directors of the Tremont Savings Bank. He was the Tremont Village Treasurer for 25 years. He found great joy in serving and he volunteered many hours over the years at Midwest Food Bank, Rescue 702, Gateway Woods Children's Home, Salvation Army, Tremont Turkey Festival, and the Apostolic Christian Church.

His great sense of humor and caring spirit will be missed. Because he repented of his sins and trusted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, we grieve, but not as those who have no hope. I Thes 4:13

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 pm on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at the Tremont Apostolic Christian Fellowship Hall. Funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at the Apostolic Christian Church in Tremont. Ministers of the church will officiate. Burial will be in the Apostolic Christian Cemetery in Tremont. The service can be viewed live at https://tremontacc.com. Guidelines as recommended by the CDC will be observed. Davis-Oswald Funeral Home in Tremont is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be given to Midwest Food Bank, 2031 Warehouse Rd, Normal IL 61761, or Tremont Rescue 702, P O Box 111, Tremont, IL.

So there you have it.

Grandpa met his Lord on November 24, and about five weeks later, U. Dan joined him. Still hard to fathom. But with the health struggles they both had in 2020, I can't wish them back. They're both pain-free and rejoicing. And so we rejoice also.

Once again, we were so grateful to have a visitation and funeral for U. Dan. This time, rather than being at the Fellowship Hall after the funeral, we were at A.B.'s for a meal with cousins. We missed Glen, Mike, and Anne; all others were there which was an amazing and wonderful blessing (Diane, Mark, and Dale were at the FH with A. Shirley and their families and were missed as well). Thankful for these special people.

Steiner Christmas Etc.

Jacob was pleased to sell his truck.

Horses don't lack attention in spite of the cold days.

A random Sunday evening with U. Dave's & A. Sarah.

Busy Monday with a crowd of Aberle/Baer kids.

We had a couple really good lake days - as long as we stayed away from the center of the lake which had newer (interpret: thinner) ice. Rink skates are nice but nothing beats a lake.

A few favorites came for lunch one day.

New Year's Eve was church and kids hosted tyg here. No px this time.

New Year's Day ice storm took out a lot of branches and a lot of power. Was pretty though.

New Years Day, all Steiners came for supper. Thankfully we had meat planned for the grill since our generator couldn't power the stove. A little juggling with other foods, and we still had a great supper and a nice evening. VERY thankful for our woodburner and generator.

Cozy - - -

Saturday dinner and Christmas was at A. Sarah's. Thankfully her power was back on by then.

I have a very talented niece.

Was a really nice Christmas even though it was so odd not to have Grandpa and Grandma there. Andrew/Kathryn/Josie and Leah were missed also.
Also, at one point during the day, a vanload sang to Grandma; no px this time though.

And thus ended Christmas 2020.
