September 2025
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

11-15-10 Skunk In The Barn

Aside from a Harvest of Gold meeting with Aunt Marcia first thing in the morning, today was pretty routine. Boys milked, Levi to Precision, school meetings, ASK came for lunch, Jacob rotor-tilled her garden, I walked with Beth and ASK, did emails, graded papers, got a tiny bit closer to being done with Our Family Circus (only a few more pictures to add…). Oh – haircuts for 5 boys in the afternoon – kind of fun turning shag-rags into respectable gentlemen again. After supper, Dad and I went outside to check on some hot-spot issues, like boats in the haymow, scrap metal everywhere, and a pigeon coop project that’s stalled out…and met up with a skunk in the barn. Actually Rascal took the worst of it – apparently in the face, if her muzzle-rubbing-in-the-grass, whining, face-pawing is any indication. We immediately locked her out of the garage (we thought we did anyway), but apparently she got in before we locked her out, because the garage is very odorous – so we’re hoping the smell doesn’t sneak into the house yet. Nasty stuff. Levi and Jesse helped Dad chase the critter out of the barn – hopefully it won’t be back. Nasty little thing. Inside for Bibletime and beds for all.

Oh – one thing I wanted to record from yesterday yet. Steve taught us about the letter I – how it’s so tall and straight, kind of a proud looking thing, as opposed to the letter C for Christ, which is the same straight line, but bent over – as we should be, in prayer and humility before God. Just an interesting observation and reminder.

That’s it.
