March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

6-1-10 June

Kind of hard to believe it’s June already. Tempus fugit (I think that’s how you spell it, right, ASK?).

Levi and Jesse milked this morning, and the rest of us worked here. Jacob started out with a math page – he’s doing really good and is very determined to continue his math a couple days a week so he doesn’t forget what he’s learned. Tori finished her Algebra, getting a 94% on her final test. Good job, Tori! I did some phonic drill with Sarah and Jewel, and then we spent the morning in the kitchen and doing laundry. I won’t list today; I took a picture before we packaged everything away.

Jesse and Jacob worked on the farm, fence, and garden; Levi went to work at CIT around 10:00. One thing Jesse did was move the cows from the back pasture, where they’ve been for the last month, up to the front pasture where the grass has been growing nice and tall for them. We prefer them up by the house when calving time comes – it’s always great excitement when new calves are born. Hopefully soon…

After a fast lunch, we went swimming at Uncle Jerry’s for a couple hours; it was good to swim with Carmen, Kate, and Lincoln too. Arriving home, kids had a snack and jumped right into chores; I put Joshua down for a nap and went to Karol’s to walk. It was pretty warm but always a good feeling to exercise (and talk!) [smile]. I got home in time to finish preparing supper to take to John and Heather (John had surgery Friday when he donated a kidney to his brother Nic), and Tori finished up our supper while Ben, Sarah, Jewel, and I ran around town delivering things. After John’s, we stopped at Java Junction for a gift certificate for Grandma Steiner’s birthday; then we delivered a gift and some food to Matt and Jenni who welcomed baby Kayley on Friday. She is a beautiful beautiful little miracle; they are so blessed. Then we stopped to sing Happy Birthday to Grandma, but she wasn’t home, so we left her gifts between her doors; I left her a message so hope she finds them.

Home to supper, Bibletime at the table, and then Dad and I went to town again to Lila Moser’s visitation. She was 99 – so thankful her race is over…her crown is won…so thankful we all have the promise of heaven ONLY because of the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Stopped at Grandma Steiner’s again, but she wasn’t home again, so came on home to put kids to beds and head there ourselves. Not really. I was wiped out, so slept for an hour while Dad ran to Morton to get fertilizer for the potatoes. We’re convinced they are stunted in their growth, as they are starting to bloom already and they’re not very big…as compared to Ben’s monster plants in his little garden (which incidentally is where the compost pile used to be). SO. I held the flashlight while Dad broadcast fertilizer on them; we wanted to do it tonight because rain was forecast. THEN, finally, to bed.

That’s all.
