March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

Happy Birthday Josh!

Monday was Josh's 13th birthday. Almost unbelievable that my baby youngest is thirteen. Doesn't seem possible. But then I see him doing his chores, caring for all the cows and steers and chickens like a fine young man; and I realize, uhh, that's because he is a fine young man.  Winter chores are harder because cows/steers need hay/corn/gluten. Their water source (creek) needs to be checked every day and chopped open so said bovines can drink... and cows/steers are in separate pastures so that means two creeks must be checked every day. Manure must be hauled. Fences also need to be checked as downed fences on a farm (even our little hobby farm) are not fun. Josh does this every day. He also takes care of all trash, all wood/kindling/ashes, and usually starts the fire every morning and does a great job keeping it going. He is a great little worker. Nope, not so little, but yes a great worker, in spite of his *complaining* and *procrastinating*

Oh yes, there's that too! He's still on the workbench, just like the rest of us...

But he's growing and learning and figuring out life and asking lots of questions and discovering new things - sometime ask him about the Rezvani Tank we saw in FL. What? You don't know what a Rezvani Tank is? Shame. Google it. Josh is fascinated with anything that moves, and the bigger the better. Big trucks, big tractors, big cars, big suvs (ie Rezvani Tank)(if you even can call it an suv...)(actually I just googled it: it's technically a Tactical Urban Vehicle which I'm sure explains a lot).  Also all things Tesla intrigue him. And Starlink. Etc. His inquisitive mind is soaking up this stuff... and I'm not sure how his Creator will use these qualities in his life.... but I am sure it's gonna be good.

Josh is also a great uncle to his niece and four little nephews. He is very patient while reading to them and playing with them, and is learning to be fun but gentle when rough-housing. This one doesn't come so easy, but like I said, he is learning. Josh makes a mean batch of puppy chow. A batch for us is the recipe x4; he has taken a bucket with him to skating a couple of times and is always glad to share with his friends and siblings. This boy is not selfish with his sweets, oh no. He doesn't do a lot of baking, but he knows his way around the kitchen and occasionally makes a batch of his favorite cookies, chocolate chocolate chip cookies.

School is hard for Josh, but he is diligent and persistent and, while he might not like his schoolwork, he does it with a will to succeed; and he usually does. Josh took piano lessons for a couple years but didn't like it too well; so he has dropped piano (for now) and is playing ukulele. He has a good voice and does a nice job singing and playing. In his free time, Josh enjoys Legos, Adventures In Odyssey, and will sometimes even help me on a puzzle (if it's not a hard one!). He also likes to read, especially Hardy Boys and other such adventure stories.

And that's our Josh, and that's about all for this time. Time to keep moving.

Happy Birthday Josh! I love you to the moon and back!

Josh picked turkey steaks for his bd meal. They looked so good as we were frying them up! I went to look for the recipe so as to provide a link - - - and discovered that I haven't posted the recipe. Now that's a shame. I'll attempt to rectify that soon.

Ha. I still have 17 posts in my draft folder to finish and publish. Now that's a little ridiculous, don't you think? But there are times to write and times to not write. And when there are times to not write, drafts will have to serve as reminders of what I want to write... sometime.

I digress.

Back to turkey steaks.

Glad for a crowd to celebrate with us.

Forgot to get a picture of his bd dessert: Malt Shoppe Dessert. (Another ha. That one was archived)

Sweet sweet littles.

Learning to share. We call that socialization😅

(Thanks Kate for the pic!) Notice a familiar theme?

And then there's Jasper and his cell phone.

(calculator😄)

That's about it for Josh's birthday.

Aannddd - we have four teenagers for awhile again.... until March when Ben turns 20....
