March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

10-18-10 Monday

Routine Monday which means boys milked in the morning, lots of laundry, school, kitchen work, and Levi went to Precision for the afternoon. Jesse studied, fixed my leaky basement kitchen sink drain (thank you very much Jesse), and worked on the livestock trailer. After their schoolwork was done, Tori cooked, drained, and boxed 15# of ground beef for the freezer, and Kate made baked oatmeal for breakfast tomorrow. Jacob helped G’pa empty corn into the corn feeder across the road and checked on the cows/steers/bull and the electric wire. Nothing too exciting (except when Jacob grabbed a wire he thought wasn’t hot but it WAS) but that’s how we like it. After lunch, I took littles on a nice walkabout the farmyard which included a stop at the kitten shed (formerly known as the woodshed) and the hill behind the hogshed for some tumbling. Josh learned how to roll down and thought it was great fun. Nap for Josh, walk for me, chores for all, read to littles, supper prep. After supper, Dad and I walked, boys worked on something or other in the shed, girls read, littles played legos. Aahh, nice and calm. Bibletime, playtime, bedtime.

A few nuggets to save:

Usually after breakfast Tori does her piano “lesson” which consists of her teaching herself any hymns she doesn’t know but wants to; she’ll also play her favorites that she knows well. I LOVE IT!!!! Occasionally I’ll help her with tricky rhythms or such, but for the most part she’s on her own. She does so good, and I so enjoy listening; actually I enjoy hearing all the kids’ lessons as they all do really good at practicing diligently.

And just what do you think is going on here?

100_3270

Nope, they’re not crawling down the stairs. They’re teaching Joshua to crawl UP the stairs BACKWARDS. Why? I certainly do not know.

Now this is some worthwhile teaching – Jacob’s teaching himself out of a job.

Oops.

Just when I thought garden work was done – Grandpa asked if we wanted these from his pepper plants which he tore out Friday (Saturday?). Yes we sure do, thank you very much!

That’s it; good night.
