March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

4-25-10 Rainy Sunday

It rained off and on during the night and was still spritzing in the morning...kind of drizzled around all afternoon too. A million dollar rain, Dad called it…nice and slow, just what the corn needs to germinate. Levi and Jesse milked early, and we were almost ready to sing before church when Levi called…they ran out of gas at Sun Ag. [frown] Why didn’t he fill up yesterday? Anyway, the kids and I sang without Dad while he got some gas to take to them, and on our way to church we dropped it off for them. They made good time after that and got to church a little after 10:00. Curt preached in the morning, on Isaiah 52 and Luke 21. Luke 21 was the poor widow who gave all she had…which is what we should do too. Curt especially spoke to the unconverted; he encouraged them to drop the stuff and come to God. Tom finished up with an exhortation to watch AND pray…I know many of us way underestimate the power of prayer. Lord, help me to do better. John had the afternoon sermon; he read Genesis 31 and Philemon. Several times he reminded us of the blessing of our church family; he’s right in that, and it’s a good thought to ponder. One prayer today was for Nancy Koch, who was taken to the hospital this morning. She’s been battling cancer and at this point doesn’t seem to be beating it. Give her and her family strength for whatever lies ahead, dear Jesus… be with them; let them constantly feel your presence as they walk this rough road.

After church, Dad gave Joshua a snack; then he snuggled down for a much-needed nap…he was so good at church and after church but he was sooo tired! He is so precious. Dad read to the girls while I prepared church bags for the evening singing.

Then Dad and I went on a walk; only got a little wet from drizzle. We had only been back a few minutes when Ben came tearing up the driveway in the pouring rain...he got his dirt, though. He showed it to me…it was very nice dark black dirt. He’s a boy after his Grandpa’s heart…he knows his dirt. I’m not sure what his dirt is destined for, but he got it all right, and the rain didn’t even hurt him.

I took Levi to the shed, trying to get a 17 year picture of him…he cooperated nicely enough, but I don’t care for the lighting in these pics so he’ll have to endure another session (all 10 painful minutes) another sunny day.

I came in to find Dad reading to the girls again…a good thing to do on a cool rainy day.

Jesse likes new library books too.

Choretime while Dad grilled delicious rib-eyes for an early supper. After chores before supper, Jacob gave the red rocket a workout. See video at bottom of post. Here’s Jacob after his splash crash. It’s kind of hard to see, but I was told there’s water dripping from his left hand. He was pretty soaked.

After supper we all went to the retirement singing for Charles at the fellowship hall. It was the nicest singing I ever remember. Many children gave off songs, which meant many other children knew them, and so the singing was full and loud. Aunt Sarah played the piano, and she does a great job of playing at a nice tempo so it doesn’t drag, and loud enough so everyone hears and keeps up. It was really beautiful. Some fellowship, but not a whole lot because I lost my voice (like usual) from singing; then home to beds for all.
