Dad & I had a great time in WI/MI last week. We saw a lot of things but had no schedule, no deadlines, no appointments or obligations, nothing except being together and talking and following our noses. We did some (short) hikes, saw some pretty waterfalls, found some thrift store bargains, ate at quaint restaurants, and talked to random local people about the economy and the area. Our mistake was to go before Memorial Day bc we saw quite a few museums and both lighthouses weren't open for tours until Memorial Day. Owell, live and learn.
When Dad used to work for OSF he'd drive through these twin towns, Marietta, WI and Menominee, MI on his way to Escanaba, MI; the Menominee River divides the two towns. We stopped at least one year with the kids along and went through a museum, but we never explored the place and Dad always wanted to. So that's what we did. And thoroughly enjoyed it. If you're looking for an interesting but off-the-beaten-path place to visit, check it out.
Marietta has a shipyard that builds military ships. Fascinating.
Our cabin.
Menominee River from our cabin.
Friday we wandered to about eight of the sixteen waterfalls that are advertised on the Waterfall Tour. Some were phenomenal; others were... not.
Between waterfalls, we dodged raindrops and found logging evidence which was pretty cool.
Another waterfall.
By far our favorite -
water is made orange by all the rust in the water, from the iron in the rocks I guess.
A family orchard we stumbled on. Very interesting, super friendly Christian people.
After supper Friday, to the mouth of the river which opened onto Green Bay (part of Lake Michigan).
Spectacular beauty.
A local who was willing to share about the community while he fished.
Saturday we drove up to Escanaba. Stopped to enjoy several beaches along Green Bay. Beautiful morning.
@ Escanaba. Kids prolly remember this. I think we climbed to the top maybe.
One of many marinas we saw. We toured a few.
We found our dream boat 😂
Pretty day.
More shipyards.
Lumber mill.
That evening we walked on the marina wall. You can't tell from the picture, but outside the wall was choppy water, inside it was calm. Which is how it was designed. But it still kind of creeped me out. I'm not a big water fan. Farm ponds are more my speed😁
Sunday we wandered home and enjoyed wandering around the farm then catching up with kids after church.
Was a great trip and just long enough. We were glad to go then glad to get home.
