March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

7-7-10 Wednesday

Up early but no walk – Dad’s cold has him kind of wiped out. Hopefully he’ll feel better by Friday when things go into high gear. Boys milked like normal. We girls bagged the blueberries early, before little hands could help drop them on the floor.

This is 80# (10# in frig for weekend) (minus what we all ate so far). We are so blessed; thank you Lord for delicious blueberries and for wonderful friends who go to much effort to get them.

Here’s how you get a little boy to drink his milk when he doesn’t like milk: mix it with yogurt (peach, this time) until it’s runny enough for him to suck in his juice bottle. He loves it this way, and I’m thankful he’s getting dairy. He’s also learned how to say “cheese” which is pretty cute (hmm. Seems like I’ve said that before, haven’t I?).

Well, he IS pretty cute – of course I’m prejudiced; I’m his mommy!

Tori made us pancakes for breakfast; she threw a few blueberries on for me and Sarah. YUMMMM.

Miller Family Whole-Wheat Pancakes

5 eggs

5 cups milk

1 2/3 cups oil

5 cups freshly ground soft whole wheat flour

4 tablespoons baking powder

2 1/2 teaspoons salt

Mix all ingredients together and cook on hot griddle. Sprinkle with a few blueberries or chocolate chips if desired. Serve piping hot with real butter and maple syrup or jam.

The main excitement of the morning was this little bull calf born to #85. He’s a cute little guy and seems to be doing fine. The first heifer calf’s name is Annie; this little boy’s name is Bill.

Thanks, Tori and Jacob, for the pictures.

After blueberries, things got rowdy for awhile. The boys got home just as Aunt Joyce was getting ready to take Kate and Ben with her to get the pop for F/S Night; Timothy and Adam stopped by to say hi while we were all outside figuring out the day. After their WalMart run, Aunt Joyce picked up Jesse, and he helped her unload all the pop at the Fellowship Hall (into the refrigerators to chill); then she took him to Uncle Randy’s. Meanwhile, Levi went up to CIT. Back home, things settled down and we got some sewing projects done, worked on Our Family Circus, Tori made bread, and littles played in the backyard pool for much of the day. It was really hot again. We were discussing going swimming when it started clouding up, so that canceled it; kids raced through outside chores, and sure enough awhile later we ended up getting another half inch of rain. Calm afternoon inside while it rained. After supper, Dad and I finalized some F/S Night plans; kids played, read, and did a few Friday jobs because Friday looks to be plenty full. Joshua likes to help Kate clean the frog jar. Only 2 left by now, but these were hatched in 2000, making them 10 years old.

Dad’s cold/sore throat kept us home from church, but it didn’t stop him from doing Bibletime. Then beds.
