We woke up to gray overcast skies which soon turned into this.
We ended up with .8” of rain (had an inch earlier this week); most of it still soaked in pretty good.
Dad was up and gone early; I got up with him and got some emails caught up since the house was quiet for awhile. It was nice to be home today – very good to be done with geometry by 10:00 (no milking). Jesse and Jacob were outside even before the rain started, doing I don’t know what, and they were out most of the day. When Levi finished geometry, he, Jesse, and Jacob went to Farm & Fleet and bought a whole truckload of fencing supplies for the next fencing project. Back here at the homeplace, everyone dug into their Friday jobs since tomorrow we have 8 dentist appointments in the morning and Dad is coming home around noon. We’ll be packing for Elgin and making sure everything is ready for Lucas to do chores for us. That’s really all that happened in the morning, besides the usual laundry; I had a quick lunch and went to town to take flowers to Grandma Steiner for Mother’s Day (she was gone Sunday and I haven’t been to town since) and take a walk with Karol. Beautiful beautiful day…sun came out, warm breeze, just beautiful.
First thing when I got home was to hoe up some hills for cucumbers & melons; it was still pretty wet, but considering we had so much rain it wasn’t bad. While the hills dried up some, a crew helped me plant my blueberry bushes.
We dug the holes pretty deep in order to replace some of the lower soil with a soil/sand/peat moss mixture.
Kate mixing the soil. It was a lot of work, but everything I read said soil preparation is pretty important, so hopefully our hard work won’t be in vain.
Filling the holes halfway before we put the plants in. If you can’t tell, it was VERY windy!
I did the first bush, then Jacob and Tori did the other 3, and Jacob watered them all good.
One of the four. I sprinkled some soil acidifier around it, hoping it will rain tonight and soak it all it. If not, we’ll water it in tomorrow. It almost looks like it’s low on the right side there; tomorrow I’ll have to look at that again. But for now, this project is done.
I was TIRED after all that labor but it looked like it could rain anytime and the melons and cucumbers still weren’t planted. Tori tackled that project while I headed up the yard cleanup and got the laundry in. She got ‘er done; thanks Tori! Then inside to start supper, do inside chores, and direct traffic. We did Bibletime after supper at the table, and Dad and I left right away to get wood for stakes from CIT. It was comforting when a police car followed us in – he was just checking on us, making sure we had the right to be there. Nice to know our men in uniform are doing their job. Home again…kids were playing hotbox and doing 4 wheeler rides with the littles while we were gone. Showers, baths, beds.
That’s all; good night.
