March 2024

March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

5-28-12 Memorial Day Weekend

by Tori

This weekend has been just packed. Mom has pictures from Aunt Sarah and Aunt Jill to go through yet, plus her own, so this isn’t going to be a picture post. Friday we did our weekly cleaning jobs and Mom and I went out for lunch and errands. After supper Mom and Dad went to Menards to get building supplies for Saturday.

Saturday morning Dad and Levi both went to work. While they were gone, Jesse and Jacob did the tar coating on the new basement, and Jesse started on the sill plate. Since they didn’t really know what they were doing, they quit and we went swimming in the lake. After swimming we did chores and had a snack/supper a little after 3:00 and then we left for the Midwest Gospel Sing in Bloomington at ISU. Jesse went earlier with Roger since he had to be there for a sound check. We made it to Bloomington by 5:00 (I was driving and almost made it all the way to ISU but then Dad got himself lost and had to take over) with plenty of time to spare before it started at 6:00. Aunt Sarah and Andrew came from Uncle Dave’s so they were with us for the evening too. Jesse was great with Brush Arbor and didn’t mess up on his break or anything. The performance was over at 9:00, and since we had eaten at 3:00 we were hungry so we stopped at McDonalds on the way home. There were some interesting looking characters there as it was 9:30 at night. We were all parading in and a lady coming out held the door for us. She asked Mom if we had ever heard of the TV show 18 Kids and Counting. That’s who we reminded her of. Heehee. In the McDonalds we must’ve looked like a circus as we managed to drop one burger, at least three chicken nuggets, one ice cream cone, one pickle, and countless fries on the floor. We got home around 10:30 and everyone went straight to bed.

Sunday morning Dad and Mom left at 7:00 to help serve the Senior Breakfast, but we still managed to get everyone ready for church and actually be there early. After church, Aunt Sarah, Uncle Dave’s and Uncle Jeff’s came to our place and all the kids from Ben and Silas and older went swimming at the lake. Levi and Andrew brought down Levi’s johnboat and we had tons of fun sinking it. After about ten showers and several loads of laundry, we had supper and then played softball till dark. After ice cream treats we sang a while then Uncle Dave’s and Grandpa & Grandma left. It was soon after they left that we ran out of water. After some intense investigation and several phone calls, we realized we were likely out for the night so we pulled out some bottled water and the boys brought in buckets from the tank to flush toilets. About then, the water worked again. Yay!! We were up till midnight with Uncle Jeff’s and Aunt Sarah.

This morning (Monday) Rob from Sauder Well Drilling came out and looked at the water situation and came to the conclusion that we had run the well out, likely due to ten showers, tons of laundry, and Joshua’s bathwater. Uncle Jeff’s left at 9:00 and Dad and the boys finished the sill plate and the exterior tile. Levi, Jesse, and Jacob went floating in the Mackinaw with a bunch of friends at 1:00, and Dad and Mom drove around Morton looking at windows and roofs. Aunt Sarah brought out Sarah’s birthday bars and stayed for awhile too. After KFC for supper we spent a quiet evening outside and are planning to go to bed early.

A few pictures from Saturday. Jacob dug up this maple tree from what used to be his tree garden and moved it to the south grove.

So that’s what we’ve been up to this weekend, and the Sunday pictures will be up soon.
