March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

P1200800

Dad came to check progress on his lunch hour. Uncle Jerry came by and said use a jackhammer!

P1200803

Digging at the south end while he waited for the call to get the jackhammer.

P1200804

Jeff ran to town to get the jackhammer, and we headed to the garden to plant the celery, broccoli, and peppers we got from Uncle Dave’s greenhouse yesterday. We’ve never done celery before so are quite intrigued with how this will go.

P1200816

Ben’s broccoli is getting big…should be ready to eat soon although heads are very small again this year.

P1200817

And Jeff starts with the drill on the Very Solid Foundation.

 P1200815

Meanwhile . . . we have some popcorn to plant, thank you very much for the leftovers Beth!

P1200818

Many hands make light work.

P1200819

Did I mention it was a perfectly beautiful day? Sunny & hot but not humid.

P1200820

Destruction continues.

P1200821

Attacking the step again.

P1200823

Leaving that Stubborn Old Step to scoop the foundation rubble.

P1200826

Bothersome old thing.

P1200827

Up from his nap, Josh raced to his vantage point on our bed!

P1200828

Rubble cleared, step will wait, time for some real digging.

P1200829

P1200832

P1200833

P1200835

P1200836

Waiting for the dump truck.

P1200841

P1200843    P1200844

The foundation of our faithful old (100+ years) barn will benefit from dirt being built up around it again.

P1200846

That’s a BIG truck!

P1200847

P1200849

Done digging for the day…

P1200850

And it’s our turn to work for awhile. After supper Dad and his crew cleaned up the sides and built forms for the wall which will be poured tomorrow.

P1200855

P1200856

P1200860

Levi is drilling holes in which to insert rebar.

P1200864

Which is these steel rods which will tie the old concrete in with the new concrete.

P1200866

(and the only reason I know such stuff is because we poured concrete in the basement when we dug out the crawlspace a few years ago)(before that I had never heard of the word rebar)(pronounced ree-bar).

P1200867

P1200868

Meanwhile, Dad and the rest of the crew built forms for the new wall.

P1200870

P1200872

P1200878

P1200879

U. Jerry’s crew will have to add braces tomorrow as it got too dark for Dad & crew to do them.

And then – bring on the concrete.

Stay tuned . . .
