March 2024

March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

10-12-11 Carpet Shampooing

So yesterday was a routine school day until a carpet cleaner stopped by and offered to shampoo our entire upstairs for $100.00. We had been thinking about it and knew we should do it at least once a decade, so at that price - sure, I can handle that. He said he was opening a new store and wanted to get his name out. Well, he wasn’t exactly straight with me, and I was gullible enough to fall for his story.  Reality was he owned a KIRBY store, and he dropped off a salesman and a helper to move furniture, and he was gone again. Salesman Melvin did a good job on the carpets, and they look great, and the price was great, but shame on owner Bill for being crafty to get in the house – because I had NO intention of buying another sweeper (I just bought one, remember!?), and certainly not a Kirby.  I borrowed Mom’s and used it enough to know it was not my preference (good machine (at $2000 it better be!) but too big to be practical for kids to use). So I felt bad for wasting the salesman’s time, because he thought he had a potential buyer, which he did NOT. And he was here for 3 hours!  $33/hour – not bad, but not what he bargained for, I’m sure. I didn’t even listen to a sales pitch – I was busy the whole time!!  Anyway, for the record, the carpets are finally shampooed now and good for another 15 years :) Yes I know 15 years is terrible but we survived anyway. See, back when Levi was sick with Kawasaki Disease, there was some concern about a strong correlation between freshly shampooed carpets and KD. No one knew why, but the numbers were high. And right before Levi got sick, we had had new carpet installed - - - combine this with the genetic factors involved, and hence my almost-paranoid aversion to new carpets and shampooing.  One KD kid is enough, thank you. Anyway. Last winter we adjusted to the new basement carpet with no issues, and since we had all the windows open yesterday, fans blowing like crazy, fresh air all day and night – I’m pretty confident that we’ll adjust to this carpet shampooing just fine too. Although had Bill stopped on a cold or rainy day when windows couldn’t be open, I would not have let him in the house. And I must confess that last night when I put Josh to bed and he seemed a bit warm, I wondered…what have I done? And during the night last night he was crying and tossing, which is completely abnormal for him, I wondered… what have I done!?? We’ll see what today brings, but he’s already downstairs entertaining his 3 oldest brothers, so he’s obviously in fine form! My late night fears were just that - - late night fears. How often do our fears prove worthless, and how often do we never even think about or fear the reality that does hit?  Like KD – we never even heard of such a thing (most doctors hadn’t, either, back then) – and it has affected our life so much. We never feared or worried about it – all of a sudden we were just IN it. But the miracle of it is that GOD was in it with us, and He will ALWAYS be in EVERYTHING He allows – we just have to believe everything is for HIS purpose, that He wants to perfect us and won’t settle for less. We KNOW that ALL things work together for good, and God will never leave us nor forsake us. That’s powerful, and indescribably awesome!!!!!!!
