March 2024

March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

10-1-11 Noodles Etc.

So for the second time in my life I attempted to make noodles (the first was a few years ago when chickens were laying very well and we had excess eggs). This time was somehow easier – many more hands perhaps? And two pasta machines probably helped too, thank you very much Marsha.

Just in case you ever wondered if your machines could flatten buns – well, at least one can.

no i didn’t do it :)

P1120865

And just in case you ever wondered if it could shred a napkin – well, it can do that too.

P1120870

[not my doing either]

After we finally kicked our creative chefs [of the teenage male variety, surprise, surprise] out of the kitchen, we got down to business. We took the 2 dozen egg yolks left over from the angel food cakes last week (about 2 cups)(we had frozen them then because we wanted to ride the combine instead of make noodles); to the thawed eggs we added 1 1/2 cup of water. After mixing this, I added flour until it made a ball – I didn’t measure the flour, but it was a LOT – maybe close to a whole 5# bag.

P1120869

First we cut the dough into small loaves and rolled these loaves through the noodle machine on a wide roll.

P1120877

Then we cut each thick slab of dough into smaller chunks and ran them through again with the rollers set to roll them really thin.

P1120881

Ben was a great help.

P1120882

As was Kate.

P1120886

Next – we cut the big long slabs into shorter sections and ran them through the cutter.

Noodles!!!

Taking them to the basement kitchen to dry for a few days.

Report to follow on the family’s opinion on them – although early poll results have revealed that the crew would like to do it again, and the Dad really likes them uncooked :)

Outside fun -

For the record, our trampoline net is almost completely trashed. A new one has been ordered, but meanwhile, I don’t love the kids on it without a net. They’re too used to it and too easily forget it’s not there. So the ladder/climber has been temporarily moved to the treehouse. I’m not sure who took these px – maybe Tori?

Great night for chili! (and apples with caramel, and hot chocolate, and s’mores - everything but the hot dogs! :) Levi was at the young group chili supper, and Jesse didn’t get done milking until later, but the rest of us loved our supper around the fire.

P1120935

But I forgot to get a picture of the fire!

Spanky likes Jacob best (according to Jacob).
