March 2024

March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

1-12-10 Spring!

Well, ok, so it's not exactly spring, but compared to the last several weeks, it was pretty warm today. Now I'm sounding like I'm in Minnesota...up there it's warm if it's above 20 or so. The kids really enjoyed being outside today...even Joshua got a little fresh air and sunshine.

Nice snow angel, Ben!

Here's the view from my window as I type.Just beautiful. Sunsets, especially when we're driving home, never fail to bring to mind a song about heaven that goes something like this:

When shadows grow long in the evening,
When birds wing their way back home,
I've got a beautiful feeling,
It's sunset, and I'm going home.

God paints the clouds in the evening sky,
To show us the way to his palace on high.
And stars mark the footsteps that my feet must roam,
It's sunset, and I'm going home.

Another pretty routine day. Dad was up and gone early again; I was up with him and Jacob was soon after, which worked out nice because he needed some extra help with prime and composite numbers. He did good. Everybody else got a good start too...Kate is on a history kick; she's racing ahead and hopes to finish it before March and warmer weather comes. Levi and Jesse milked and were actually home a little earlier than usual. Joshua often enjoys a second breakfast with them... sometimes I think he likes what they feed him better than what I feed him...imagine that.

After lunch I walked with Karol; it was a gorgeous day for a walk. Just perfect...sunny, still, dry, bright, beautiful. The fresh air was sooo nice, and the warmth of the sun felt so good on my face. I love to get out afternoons and walk; what a blessing.

When I got back, the kids had dishes done and were in various stages of getting dressed to go outside. I helped get that show on the road then spent an hour returning emails. The children trickled back in a few at a time, motivated to get chores done promptly because Tori and I were making sugared biscuit donuts. Mmmmm. Not the best for us healthwise, but good for tying heartstrings... especially the boys. I've heard "the way to a man's heart is through his stomach," and after having 3 bottomless growing young men I think I believe it. I suspect their love language is food!
