March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

This is a new program so we’ll see what I can do with it. First I can change fonts on my text, but not the title. Neat. Don’t know why it matters, but I always like this font better.

Kind of a routine day today, except Levi and I had to run to Morton to do some banking when he and Jesse got home from milking. Did a quick Wal-Mart stop (8 minutes – I timed it) then home again for lunch and a good walk with Karol, feels wonderful to get fresh air. It’s still gray out, kind of foggy and blah, but it’s funny how I don’t notice it so much when we’re walking and talking. Anyway, got school done with the 4 youngest before I left, and then after I read to those same 4 (Kate, Ben, Sarah, Jewel) and took a catnap, I went over Jacob’s school too. He’s been bit by the winter blah bug and is determined to get his history and science done before spring too. Go Jacob! It was a puzzle and quiet play afternoon for awhile then. 100_0200 After awhile the kids went out to do chores; even Sarah and Jewel helped Tori haul wood to the house and hand it down to me. They’re good little helpers. Then they all blew off some steam in the shed, and when Joshua woke up he joined them for some fresh air too. When the snow is turning to mud and it’s cold, damp, and gray, nobody enjoys being outside for much more than chores. While the 4 littlest raced around awhile, Tori, Jacob, and Kate were busy stripping copper wire to sell for scrap...Jacob has quite a handful, and the bucket behind him is really heavy.

100_0189Mr. Vole in his new home in the shed. Poor guy, he already escaped once and was recaptured. Life’s rough in these parts.

Since everybody was enjoying fresh air and exercise, I started spaghetti for supper, which is noteworthy because I can’t remember the last time I’ve made spaghetti. With the oldest 5 kids capable, I just haven’t done it for a long time. Since Levi and Jesse don’t normally milk on Tuesday afternoons, they always get a chunk of time for studying, and we get to have them around all afternoon, and they get to eat supper with us. We’re so glad they have a good job that they really enjoy (and they sure do!) and from which they can gain a lot of experience.

After supper we gathered in the family room again, nicely warm with the woodburner fixed, and Dad started reading Big Red. Joshua was so good…only difference I can figure out from yesterday is that today he took a very good afternoon nap (good meaning long) and was happy as a lark the whole afternoon and evening. He’s just such a light sleeper, I guess, that yesterday a passing car, or a barking dog, or whatever, woke him too soon, and he was just tired and grumpy the rest of the day. Not much I can do about that, though, because that’s life. He has a fan in his room, but I guess that’s not enough white noise. Anyway, we all enjoyed his cheerful jabber and play tonight. Precious, oh so so precious, that’s all. He was so cute during Bible time too, then; usually he’s in bed and misses it. Sometimes he can be such a little ham!

After hide-and-seek turned into a wrestling match (why does that always happen?), everyone was so hot and the overhead fan was on…. a rare sight for Joshua. He just stared at it pretty cute. Dad read in Exodus where at Moses’s word the water was turned into blood. We talked about that awhile…what a yukky thought.

Then evening chores, beds for all, now this.
