March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

1-8-10 Happy Birthday Levi

It's hard to believe our first baby is 17 already. Where did the years go? "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:" Phil. 1:6. We love you Levi and are so thankful for the joy you bring to us. Your love for your Lord and your family is such a blessing!

Today was a run-around-town day with Aunt Sarah. We hadn't gone out for lunch for awhile, and so we combined that with errands. Did the bank, Walmart, lunch, Colby Health Food Store, Vintage Optical (which was closed for lunch!), Papa Murphy's, back to Vintage, back to Colby, and finally home an hour later than I'd wanted! But the house was still standing, with most jobs completed, and the kids did fine...found quite a coloring frenzy going on when I walked in. New coloring and dot-to-dot books are all the rage around here lately, from Tori all the way down to Jewel. Aunt Sarah got Jacob and Kate some Super Challenge Dot-to -Dot books, with numbers up to 1400...the kids are kind of fanatic over them. I can see why, because I did one once...it is pretty fun I must admit.

So after putting Josh down for a nap and reading to the girls, I laid down with a horrible backache and a hot water bottle. Felt much better after a short nap and tackled the basement...I overruled Kaitlyn's assessment that it didn't need cleaning [smile]. All the kids came in from choring and trapping and I put them all to work. Got to practice being a drill sergeant. Again. Hmmm...seems like I do that a lot...

No one wanted Levi's birthday dessert after a huge pizza supper so we all landed in the family room after awhile and watched a video, Ray Scott's Complete Guide to Creating GREAT SMALL WATERS. Ok, so we're still dreaming...but a lake will never become reality if we don't dream, so we'll just keep on dreaming awhile...at least some of us will. Some of us could be more rightly called dream-killers, but we won't say any names... Following this highly interesting and informative video we pulled out the infamous HuSteKaKo Productions 1987 movie Lifesavers, and my, oh my, oh my, did we laugh! Some of the younger kids didn't catch a lot of what was going on (some of the time the actors themselves didn't seem to know what was going on, for that matter), but the older ones, Dad and me included, certainly did! After that jolly good time everyone was ready for dessert, so we broke out the Malt Shoppe Dessert and dug in. Then it was bed time for all and now it's my turn, good night!
