March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

Sweet Cereal Snack Mix

Welp this one has some history... not exciting history, but history nonetheless. I got this recipe from my friend Cheryl many many years ago; for many years I took it to Kaiser Getaway Weekends. I remember A. JeanAnn was so impressed with it, and I was impressed that she was impressed, because she was such a good cook and had such delicious Chocolate Mint Cookies. Anyway, time marched on, and, in the process of transferring recipes to my 3-ringed notebook or to computer, somehow this recipe was lost and forgotten.

About a year ago Dad asked me about it, and the hunt began. Eventually I found it, and it is as easy and delicious as I remembered. It disappears quickly around here.

Here it is in all its remembered and revived glory. Be forewarned. This is delicious and very addicting.

                                           Sweet Cereal Snack Mix

Combine in brown paper grocery bag and set aside:

3 cups chex cereal

3 cups captain crunch cereal

3 cups pretzel sticks

Combine in microwave-safe bowl:

½ cup butter

¼ cup corn syrup

1 cup brown sugar

½ teaspoon salt

Microwave 2 minutes. Stir. Microwave 2 more minutes. Add ½ teaspoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Mix well. Pour over cereal mixture in bag; shake well.  Microwave 1 minute. Shake well. Microwave 1 more minute. Spread on wax paper to cool. Add 1-2 cups m&ms. Store in airtight container.

**original recipe calls for 2 cups chex cereal, 2 cups captain crunch, 2 cups golden grahams, 2 cups pretzels, and 2 cups peanuts**
