March 2024

March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

7-18-11 Calm and Busy

How can a weekend be both calm and busy? Well, because there was no reunion, company, or traveling plans, it was pretty calm. But because we had reunion and company last weekend and have travel plans next weekend, it was busy. So it goes.

Saturday morning we enjoyed brunch at Grandpa Steiner’s with Grandma, ASK, and Uncle Jeff’s minus Andrew. They were here for a reunion in Congerville and stayed at Grandpa’s Friday night. After brunch and visiting awhile, we came home to dig into the list of jobs that has been waiting for Dad’s day off. The list included but is not limited to fitting the Thule to the new van top, getting lumber from CIT for the next step of the horse stall, much clean-up of buildings, canning green beans (actually that was the girls & I, not Dad), and re-designing the beetle traps (thanks Jesse). Jesse spent some time working on his tractor, and after a short swim at Uncle Jerry’s, Dad did CIT payroll and the rest of us gave the van a major cleaning, inside and out. Dad brought some wax home with him, and we had our first lesson in waxing vehicles. Not to be the last, I’m sure.

Yesterday we were blessed as always to worship with our church family. Messages were inspiring, singing was beautiful, and fellowship was precious. After naps and chores, we enjoyed an evening of fellowship and singing with Greg & Mary’s family and others. Contrary to Sarah’s report, we were not at Greg & Mary’s house; we were at Dean & Karen’s beautiful cabin. Regardless, we had a wonderful time; thanks Beutels all!

We came home to a very very DARK house – not a good thing when it is 90 degrees in the shade and a week of 100+ temps are forecasted. The kids settled down to sleep in the cool basement, as the upstairs was very toasty, and CILCO was on the scene amazingly fast. Somehow our main breaker switch had flipped, and all power was shut off to the house. The CILCO worker said the switch might be going bad (in which case said blackout might happen again and we’ll know to get it replaced…), or it might be a freak surge of seventeen appliances at once and will never happen again.

Or it might.

Not too comforting, that thought…

Well, the upstairs kids moved back up to their beds, and we finally settled down to sleep too, very thankful for our electricity and more convinced than ever that, alas and alack, we would NOT have been good pioneers.

Anyway.

Weekend px:

We picked our first ripe peaches from the Scarlett Pearl tree. Not the greatest looking peaches, and quite wormy, but delicious white flesh besides all that. Very very sweet.

That’s it - - our total from the first tree. Not a great showing, but it’s a young tree yet. Hopefully next year they will be more numerous and bigger.

Why I don’t spend much time on flower gardening: yarrow doesn’t look too good when it’s attacked by a rowdy 2-year-old on a tricycle!

I’m not sure why he spared the butterfly bush, but it looks good – just starting to blossom.

Evidence of a busy Monday morning!

Josh made some eggs for us :)

This afternoon I took a few of the kids to swim at Uncle Jerry’s (some wanted to stay home and build with K’nex!) – and we got rained out! Yay!! We ended up with .3” of rain. Nice shower and filled up the tank some.

And that’s it - - - have a wonderful day!
