September 2025
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

3-19-11 Woodchopping

Today we all got in on the fun of cleaning up a HUGE sprawling old (57 years, I was told) hedge tree at Uncle Harley’s cabin. A tree company had cut it down, so we just had to chop it into smaller pieces. In case you don’t know much about hedge trees, the thicker branches are very thorny, so tonight our troops have many battle scratches from the day. Thankfully though there were no major accidents. AND, it was a BEAUTIFUL day!

My first view of the site – looking east from our road. The stump is visible slightly to the lower right of the center of the picture, and the branches are to the left of the stump. Rascal was so funny—we decided she has some shepherd in her, as she very capably rounded up the steers in the corner of the pasture.

Dad ran the chain saw, with Levi pulling the branches away from him.

Many hands took branches to Jesse’s fire…

When Dave joined the crew, they let the fire spread to burn off the weeds and tall grasses.

Wood for the winter. Actually it won’t be for several winters yet, as it was completely green. Everyone got a good dose of sap by the end of this job!

So ended the woodcutting part of the day – and fencing comprised most of the rest of the day for the men, with girls doing some cleaning and odd jobs in the house for me (and Levi milked).

And then we thoroughly enjoyed our supper at Bob Evans! No wait, good food, reasonably priced, and best of all – great atmosphere. No alcohol, loud music, blaring televisions, or lights flashing. Mostly older people, although we did see some folks we knew – but definitely a notch above other restaurants to which we’ve gone.

That’s it!

  1. Oh Ruth! I can completely relate to this post. I have the greatest of want everyday to spend time with the Lord before we get started. But like you said we wake up behind, and our feet hit the floor running. :)I've been trying to get most of my Bible reading in at night when I first go to bed. It seems like no one usually needs me right then. And then (if possible)before my feet do hit the floor in the morning, pray. It's not my first pick for how I would like to schedule it,but I do get that much needed time with God.
I love all the pictures. You live in such a pretty place. Take care, Kristi :)
