March 2024

March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

Saturday Scenes

A gorgeous day. Kitchen work inside, then outside for some garden work. Tori left early to go on a TYG bus trip to OH, and Jesse & Jacob were on their way back from their trip out west, so it was just Dad & me and five kids all day. Well, with Levi & Echo popping in a couple of times too which was great, but it still seemed like half the family was missing. Which it was. Which is a good thing. Occasionally. I don’t think I’m ready for so many to be gone all the time, but I don’t dread that day for I know it’s coming. It’s good to see the kids growing wings and starting to fly on their own – - - and it’s good that they come back to the nest for more advice and maturity before they take that final flight and find their own nest. And then come from their nest to visit us in our nest.  I can hardly picture what this nest will look like when it’s empty, but I know it’ll be good; because our awesome God is so faithful to lead each one of our chicks every step of the way to his/her own nest.

Well.

That kind of took a turn for the ramble.

Back to Saturday.

Yes. Potato bugs already. Best remedy: pick eggs off of the leaves before they hatch. Daily.

Next: pick up a bull calf.

P1140781

Meat chicks are growing nicely. Soon to find a home in the freezer.

P1140783

But my, aren’t they ugly!?

P1140785

Off to the local farm store – with Kate at the wheel, ai-yi-yi. She did just fine, I’m told; only killed it a few times. She got a C on her first stick-shift lesson. Lots of room for improvement.

Garden report:

LOTS of grape blossoms, which we haven’t had for many years. Time will tell if they turn into grapes. Stay tuned.

P1140777

So far, so good.

P1140816

Lots of cherries, but if you look closely, some have funny spots & blemishes. Not sure what that’s about but again, time will tell.

P1140821

I don’t remember what this is but it’s sure beautiful.

P1140830

Felines are doing fine.

P1140803

Chore time.

P1140809

Love this smile!

P1140813

P1140819

After supper, took off for a walk with Dad on a gorgeous evening - - -

P1140822

P1140823

P1140825

- - - but cut our walk short and headed back home when this blew up.

P1140828

Absolutely awesome.

P1140831

About this time, the cold front hit. Amazing.

P1140834

P1140835

P1140836

P1140838

P1140839

Because it’s there, and she can. That’s why!

P1140842

P1140843

FINALLY the rain started.

P1140844

And the hail!

P1140853

P1140855

P1140856

Don’t know what’s more fun – watching it rain,

P1140858

or watching it on radar!

P1140860

Rather odd as it rained – with a sunset. I missed a shot of the brief rainbow that Josh pointed out.

P1140862

And so while it rained and rained and rained, we headed inside to shower and get ready for bed.

And wait for our boys to get home!
