March 2024

March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

2-27-13 A Frog Story

by Tori

On the cupboard in our laundry room, we have a jar of water with a frog in it. It makes a great discussion topic. Because we have had the frogs for over 10 years, Mom decided that they deserve a blog post.

Way back in 1999, Jesse, age 5, got a certificate for 4 African Water Frog tadpoles from Grandpa and Grandma Kaiser for a Christmas gift; in January of 2000 they came in the mail. Mom kept a daily journal on their growth and also sketched pictures of them at different stages. Of the four, three made it to adulthood. We had three for a long time, until about three years ago when another one died. A third one died last winter, leaving us with just one. Since their lifespan is 10 to 15 years, the last one may not live much longer, which is why Mom wanted the post done now.

The funny thing about our last frog is that it is older than over half of us kids. Kate, Ben, Sarah, Jewel, and Josh don’t know what life is like without a jar of frogs. Every week until about 4 years ago Jesse changed the water, and then Kate took over. Jesse still feeds it every night, and will continue to do so until the last one is gone.

Here are a few of the notes Mom took about them.

The lone survivor.

So that’s the history of our frogs.

ps from Mom: another strange thing about these pets is that nobody ever named them. Lone frog is still just that: frog! And the kids are already talking about getting more for Josh and the younger kids when this one dies. Smile

Have a wonderful Wednesday!
