March 2024

March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

6-19-12 Apples

Well so since our apples froze off (all but a few dozen, that is), we were going to stretch out last year’s supply of applesauce and then do without. But Sunday night Grandpa Steiner told us we could have his neighbor’s apples, so we headed into town yesterday morning to pick them, hopefully before the Japanese beetles got to them. We well remember last year’s picking – bugs everywhere – in our hair, down our shirts, up our skirts, etc. etc.

NO FUN.

And we were NOT going to do that again…

But thankfully this year we beat the bugs and came home with 10 bushels of beautiful apples. No pruning, no spraying, and these beautiful apples!!! How do they do it??? Live in town, I guess! And they didn’t want them!

Well we’re happy to help them out since they are so kind to share them – as I understand it, if no one picks them they get mulched Smile. As in, Mr. Homeowner mows them up with the lawnmower.

Anyway.

Sunday morning we went to church – no beetles.

On the way home from church – beetles hitting our windshield.

After church – lots of beetles Sad smile.

We had been enjoying fresh raspberries daily, but no more.

After being sprayed with Sevin, yes of course the chickens enjoyed all the nice dead bugs (hmmm. Does that mean we’re eating toxic eggs now????). But our raspberries are no longer fit for human consumption. We are, however, hopeful that next year when the beetles don’t come (wishful praying), our raspberry bushes will return with renewed health and vigor. Meanwhile, aren’t these things ugly?!!
