March 2024

March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

So our littlest little is now three.

How can three years have gone by so quickly? Blink, now he’s three, just like that. And what a precious three he is. We love you so much, little “Washy,” and are so glad God added you to our family!

And.

If there was any question before today, now it’s official. All our kids are odd.

1-30-12 BLINK

Where does the time go?!

Time for a little catch up.

Back to Friday, when ASK brought out bars for Joshua’s birthday which is tomorrow, because she won’t be here tomorrow because she is in FLORIDA!!!!!!!!!! NO I’m not wishing myself there!! (well maybe just a little)

P1170086

Yes. Tomorrow, for the first time ever, I will have a 3-year-old baby. Not that he’s a baby, oh hardly that at all – he’s most definitely NOT a baby, although when it’s to his advantage he’ll still claim the title . . .

Ben enjoys his ukulele a lot -

And it sounds great, and I LOVE IT.

Saturday morning surprise – that rare white stuff called SNOW!

Saturday night we had a houseful of friends (no px, oops) in for pizza, and then headed to the Pekin Rink for some skating – this time hockey was included, and our boys and all others, from what I could tell, had a BLAST. The younger kids even had a game going for awhile – a MUCH calmer (and safer) game than the boys’, I might add. And some of us somewhat even calmer skaters enjoyed going in circles around the rest of the rink, and some of the others who didn’t care to skate either watched the hockey game or chatted in the warm room.  And THANKFULLY, there was no blood although a few players were seen limping later. . .

Sunday we were greatly blessed to have Doug & Beth and girls (Brianna and two friends - Abby had to work and Cassie & Carrie were on the ACYF bus) come for supper, as well as Christy and Grandpa & Grandma S. After supper we had time for a little singing around the piano and then with instruments before we left for church for the ACYF program.

P1170098

I think Doug wants a bass.

P1170099

sorry Grandma K – I didn’t notice the closet door was open until right now :(

And now today was GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad for a chance to wash the van.

*secret* these two were fighting like cats/dogs until I made them smile for the picture. They did much better after that - a smile chases the grouchies away, it really does!!

FAREWELL TO OLD GREEN

A brief history.

We bought this 2000 Dodge Ram van in 2000; It ran faithfully for almost 12 years with few or no problems. In June (yes that says JUNE) it clunked, and Mike the Mechanic had a terrible time figuring out what was wrong.  After several strikes, it turned out it was the computer. Mike replaced the computer, and Thursday we got the call: it is ready to be picked up. (What? Already??) Friday I took it directly to Showroom Ready which did what they advertised – got it showroom ready. Saturday I brought it home and Jesse posted it on Craigslist. Saturday afternoon someone came to look at it. Needed to think on it a little. Today - - - - - they came and got it. Gone! Done! Off our property, turn the page, end of chapter, close the book, D.O.N.E. DONE!!  (except for the calls that keep coming – guess we priced it too low – or so accountant Dad says – I’m not saying that at all. I’m just GLAD IT’S GONE)

So.

Throw in driver’s ed for Tori for the next four weeks (which includes a trip to Pekin Wednesday to get her (gulp) driver’s permit), the new robotic milkers at RVD which means the boys are there a lot but I really don’t know when and I don’t know if they know for sure either, two ortho appointments tomorrow, music lessons on Wednesday, piano lessons (one down, three to go…), schoolwork of course, groceries in there somewhere sometime, and a few runny noses and coughy kids, and this week looks to be pretty full.  Not much mundane routine this week. But that’s ok. A week or two is ok with me. Or 3 or 4. But I’ll be glad when we return to routine. Really glad.

And on that note -

P1170114

good night.

1-27-12 It’s Friday!

by Tori

It’s Friday! That means when Dad gets home from work tonight the weekend starts (that’s not official or anything, just my definition of a weekend). I love weekends and in three hours another one starts. I can’t wait. This week has been a blur. I don’t know why because we weren’t busy at all. We never are. Ok, at least hardly ever are. Wednesday night we went to church, and yesterday afternoon Mom and Jesse went to to town to get our old green van (yes it’s fixed!)(gasp!). Jesse drove Mom all over town after dropping off the van at a cleaners. Thursday we babysat Hanna and Maria. Aunt Sarah came over for music practice yesterday and for lunch and music today.

Music on Wednesday.

The three littles have a snack (keeps them happy while we practice).

Jacob and Kaitlyn were doing chores across the road on Tuesday and decided to lift one of the boardwalks “just to see if anything is underneath it.” They were both rather startled to find a large nest full of rats under it (large meaning about 6 inches deep and 1 foot by 1 foot. Naturally they decide to look inside the big feeder next to the board which has been empty for weeks. Not finding anything they go back across the road to the backyard, forgetting to shut the feeder. So a half hour later Jacob remembered the feeder and goes over to shut it and decides to flip the boardwalk up again “just to see if the rats came back.” Needless to say, he was extremely surprised to find the whole area under the wood brown with rats. And he didn’t have his high boots on either. And remember, this board is like 3 1/2 feet wide and 6 feet long. So Wednesday afternoon we had a rat killing party. Rascal accounted for a lot of the kills. I don’t even know the final number. I think a lot got away. If you don’t care for gross things just skip these next few pictures.

On a much nicer note, here are some pictures from babysitting. After Meg left, Josh was so cute studying Hanna. He said, “Oh - - - it is cute!” in the funniest way, almost as if he’d never seen a baby or was surprised at what he saw!

1-25-12 Be Still, My Soul

Be still my soul: the Lord is on thy side;

Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;

Leave to thy God to order and provide;

In every change He faithful will remain.

Be still my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend,

Thro’ thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still my soul: thy God doth undertake

To guide the future as He has the past.

Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;

All now mysterious shall be bright at last.

Be still my soul: the waves and winds still know

His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.

Be still my soul: the hour is hastening on

When we shall be forever with the Lord,

When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,

Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.

Be still my soul: when change and tears are past,

All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Please pray for Derek & Leann and their family.

O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. Romans 11:33-36

1-24-12 Nothing…

…much has happened this week so there’s really nothing much to blog about. Our once beautiful skating pond has melted into a nice slush, so skating hasn’t been an option, and there is no snow so four-wheeling isn’t exactly happening either. It’s not bitter cold out, and the sun was shining most of the day, so we have much for which to be thankful.  So far this week, this is the highlight:

P1170043

*smile*

Not that I’m complaining, oh no, far from it. Once again, all thanks and praise to God, we are all healthy and have escaped the flu and fever bugs that are lurking. We may yet have our turn coming – but until then, we’ll just revel in the routine and marvel at the mundane……….

Lots of library books -

And that’s it for now.

Hope you are having a wonderful week!!
