September 2025
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

2-20-11 Basement Done

Friday night Dad and I headed to Pekin to get a few last things to finish up the basement project; we headed over to Steger’s and bought a new couch as well, which will be delivered next week. Saturday morning was spent doing kitchen jobs, and then the girls and I tackled the storage room, leaving the furnace room and kitchen for next week. And I never did get pictures of the wreck it was, but that’s ok. I much prefer how it is now anyway.

This is another of Ben’s pictures. Thanks to the leghorns that a friend gave us, we are now abundantly blessed with eggs. Many eggs means more fun for Ben!

Dad helped Ben assemble a Friday night purchase.

Finished room – except for the unmade beds. That needs some work yet.

Finishing up – and Joshua playing with one of his favorite (forbidden) toys.

Computer lab [smile]. I love how nice this turned out – looks like it will  be an excellent study room. It’s both cheery and cozy…kind of amazing compared to how it used to be.

And another (see recipe at end of post).

Sweet littles.

After a VERY spontaneous Saturday afternoon decision to add a foosball table to our basement, one was found via craigslist in Morton and promptly purchased and acquired. So now we enter the world of foosball.

Don’t know if anyone is any good at it, but four can play and everyone has fun. I have yet to touch it; it seems to be in hot demand.

New room, looking south. It looks a lot different – and we love it!

Playroom fun.

We kind of chuckle because after 18 years and 9 children, we finally have a playroom! How did we ever manage without one? :)

Then tonight we were at Grandpa Steiner’s for his annual birthday wiener roast. I didn’t get many pictures, and of those I took only this one was decent. Uncle Dave’s (minus Sandy, Seth, and Silas), ASK, Tricia, and Steven & Kari were there also. Good food, good fellowship, good fun. But we forgot to sing happy birthday to Grandpa!

Happy Birthday Grandpa!

And, here’s another recipe to remember:

S’mores Bars

2 1/2 sticks butter, softened but not melted

1 cup brown sugar

1 cup graham cracker crumbs (about 6 whole crackers)

2 cups flour

3 cups mini marshmallows

1 cup chocolate chips

Beat butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Add flour and graham cracker crumbs and mix well. Press into greased jelly roll pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 10-15 minutes. Remove from oven; sprinkle with marshmallows and then chocolate chips. Return to oven; broil for 2-4 minutes until marshmallows are puffy and very slightly browned.

Yummm!
