March 2024

March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

Farewell March

Well I never did get a picture of the snowstorm on Saturday, but at the end of the day we had about 6” of really wet heavy snow which no one here was thrilled about. Actually I don’t know if I know of anyone who was thrilled by it. At any rate, by Tuesday, the snow was going… which meant the yard was muddy again. Oh well. This unwelcome snowstorm also meant moisture for the ground and lake which we need so no complaints here.

Tuesday was fun with special cousins here.

Thursday was fun with three favorite Aberles here.

Yesterday was fun with Alliyah and a bunch of other people here too. Kate whipped up a couple pans of these delicious Smore’s Bars, and they’re almost too pretty to eat with the miniature m&ms she put on top.

It’s hard to tell, but she had the smuggest “I’m so cool” grin on her face. So cute.

Now today was a fun busy morning with a couple of favorites here to help.

And that pretty much wraps up March. We’re all hoping April brings some warmer days…although I see snow in the forecast again for tomorrow…

Ben

I’ll try to condense life lately into several main subjects.

1. Brandi. After several frustrating weeks where she would run right through the electric shock-collar fence we’ve installed for her, Tori made a few phone calls to the fence company, made a few changes, and now Brandi greatly respects her boundaries. Since she can run off all that puppy energy now (not locked in barn or tied on leash), she’s a lot calmer and not quite so jumpy on people. Which makes her a much nicer pet. She still likes the four-wheeler and gets many rides from her people friends.

2. Ice rink. What you see here is the former pigeon coop, turned rink shack, now turned back to pigeon coop, making its way up to Levi&Echo’s house where it currently houses several pigeons. And yes, that means the rink shack is no more which also means our last rink has been taken down. The older kids who used to use it all the time aren’t around much anymore, and the younger kids don’t seem to love it quite like the older kids did. So, time marches on, bringing changes; and while we’ve had a lot of fun with a backyard ice rink, this change is welcome by all.

3. Ben. Ben turned 16 a couple of weeks ago and thus we have another driver in the house. Which is a really good thing because of his involvement in the Tremont robotics club; we all took turns doing a lot of chauffeuring this winter and are glad he’s now reached that milestone of independence. Congratulations, Ben!

P1220091

4. Family times. Many random times with family here, there, and everywhere,

P1220092

including a special daughter-in-law-to-be. And wedding plans too, both for A.Joyce&Mike’s wedding and Jesse&Lucy’s wedding. Guest lists and new dresses and all sorts of fun stuff like that. And our basement is a temporary storage pod for furniture for J&L’s new home. And this sweet little granddaughter who is growing like a wildflower and is twice as cute. No, Josh is not puckering up to kiss her; I think he’s protecting his tower from her demolition attempt.

P1220093

5. Robotics. Ben’s team took first place in both its regional competitions so far, and, in between writing this post, I’m watching Team 2481 matches livestreamed from Milwaukee, WI, at another regional there. The team is already qualified for the coveted World Championship competition in Detroit in April, but wouldn’t it be something if they won yet another regional this season?! Pretty exciting stuff! It’s been a good experience for Ben and will hopefully give him guidance into a career choice as he gets involved in various aspects of roboting.

So there you have another peek at life lately. That’s it for this time.

Stay warm during this spring snowstorm that’s predicted tomorrow!

Littles

So I keep having these great aspirations of a long newsy post recording all the busy-ness of life that keeps me from this blog. I’m realizing the main thing is that since I no longer have a laptop, I just don’t get excited about sitting at the desk to journal life. As opposed to the laptop which rests on my lap while I put my feet up and relax. Well rumor has it I might be getting a laptop for my birthday so we’ll see how that shakes down. And meanwhile, life lately consists of lots of littles. We love them all.

Henry.

Okay so that’s an awful lot of cuteness in one post.

And you might think that’s all our life is – littles – well it’s really not. They’re just a highlight ‘cos they’re so stinkin’ cute all the time. Maybe the next post will have a peek at life right now besides littles - - -

but I make no promises!
