March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

4-30-11 Saturday Already

Well, internet was down for the first half of the week, so all the posting was done after the fact. That’s part of life in the sticks, I guess :)

It’s been a good week in spite of rainy cool days. Monday was catch-up day. Slow start and lots of laundry. Jacob had a busy day too :)

Tuesday we sang at Restmor and had some fellow singers over for lunch, fellowship, and play. I took the camera outside but never did take a picture. Jacob took these pictures later– everyone is convinced that this is the prettiest the crabapple tree has ever been. I think I agree.

Silly little girl!

P1040506

Jacob’s self-photo. He took about a half dozen of them, each one goofier than the next. This won first prize.

P1040511

Wednesday we ran around doing errands which included ortho for both Tori and Jacob. Makes for a busy day. Thursday Kate made bread, and Tori & I made 15# of Salisbury steak for the Kaisers we’re having tomorrow.

Joshua is happy with his loaf of bread :)

 P1040524

He has his own unique way of forming it.

P1040526

Studying diligently.

P1040530

Finally by Friday it warmed up a little bit!

P1040536

Ducklings are fully enjoyed by all.

P1040537

Cute little things.

P1040554

Jewel borrowed Jacob’s shirt! :)

And this was today. Sunny and warm over midday, but by choretime the temp had dropped quite a bit.

2006 Braestar tree has lots of blooms but that’s about it. The Red & Yellow Delicious trees look pretty good too, but the rest are pretty sparse. Won’t be much spraying to do, but won’t be many apples either this year. Maybe not even enough to sauce. Meanwhile, peaches still look promising so far…  Time will tell.

Jesse built this table to put his tractor engine on.

P1040581

Tori, Jacob, Kate, and Ben went fishing in the creek again – prize crawdad.

P1040587

Prize tadpole.

P1040595

More prizes – bullheads and bluegills mainly (I think).

P1040592

We’ve been having these wonderful potatoes lately for supper. I’m always looking for new potato recipes, and this one was a hit. They always look so pretty and are SO EASY. And delicious!*

P1040599

And we celebrated Dad’s birthday after supper. We all enjoyed the Malt Shoppe Dessert that Tori made this morning. Happy Birthday again Dad!

P1040604

Dad’s new lamp is kind of goofy to look at, but it really lights up the room!

Josh kept busy during Bibletime :)

*Western Cut Potatoes (recipe from LaRae Dill in the Steiner Cookbook)

Wash desired number of potatoes, and cut in half lengthwise. Cut an X into the top of each potato. Place cut side up on a cookie sheet, and bake at 400 degrees for 20-30 minutes.  Remove potatoes from oven, and spread butter over the top of each potato half. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, dill weed, garlic powder, or your choice of seasoning. Bake 30 more minutes or until tops are browned.

That’s all; good night!!

  1. I thought that bread Joshua is 'forming' looked suspiciously like the bread I was eating as I read your blog. Kaitlyn told me it was the little loaf you'd given me. Let him form . . . I'm not picky! What a cutie! And those potatoes look delicious - of course, I never met a potato I didn't like. Jacob - that picture doesn't even look like you. You're so much cuter!

Thanks for the post, Ruth. I love seeing what's going on at your house and looking at pictures of your kids.
