March 2024

March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

Garden and Guests

by Jewel
We spent the afternoon planting the garden, since it was nice out. It was a little cloudy but still pretty nice for the most part.

I guess U. Randy had the same idea on planting, since he had the planter out all afternoon in the field around our house. It made pretty things pretty dusty when he came close  to our house on the end rows, but it wasn't super bad.

This is the conversation that usually happens whenever Josh is wrestling and being mean to Brandi
Me: Josh, quit being mean to the dog.
Josh: I'm not being mean, she likes it. (in baby talk: "don't you Brandi")
Me: Oh whatever. Tori, Josh is  being mean to your dog.
etc..

I have no idea what this is.
(editor's note: for the record, this is four rhubarb plants)

Another editor's note, for the record: potatoes (not up yet), onions, one row of beans (not up yet), 2 rows of sugar snap peas, 2 rows of spinach, one row of lettuce. Tomatoes in buckets, green peppers behind them.

The big game around our house lately is still Monopoly Deal. It's a simplified card version of Monopoly, which involves stealing property and property sets. It's a lot of fun, and we would definitely recommend it to anybody who likes fun card games

Flint discovered the gold mine of tractor toys in Josh's room and was in little boy heaven for the evening until we had to put them away.

I think Jesse & Lucy must have come over for church, or just to hang out on a Saturday afternoon. I'm not for sure. There are so many people that come and go all the time at this house, it's hard to keep track of who's here when and why.

Saturday evening we had guests. We got the tractors out for Flint but put them away before Auggie and Wyatt got here so there wouldn't be any jealousy among them.

Okay, apparently there were tractors out anyway.  And Josh's turtle.

Until Auggie tried to take a bite of it.

We have this robin nest in  the orchard right now. It is literally picture perfect.

More Monopoly Deal.

Two Baer boys were pretty impressed with the snake. Ella was impressed, but scared. Clara thought it was a toy, but we didn't let her have it. Jenna wasn't impressed at all :)

Ben had to see if he could do the Sally-ups pushup challenge; and since Katie can't turn down a challenge she tried it too. I don't know how far any of them made it.

And while they were at it...

We had Joelle again on Wednesday, and as usual she had to go and find the hoverboard right away.

And I'm sure she was a great help with Sarah's Algebra.

Sarah baby-sat this kiddo for awhile, but he really doesn't even need one on one, although we're all willing to give it to him. He just bops around and tells people to go "hide," and so he stands there watching while you hide and  then he comes and finds you. He loves it, and it's pretty cute to watch.

Awwwwww.

Yep he's mighty cute.

Lego Craze Days

by Sarah

I'm not sure what day this was, but I babysat Vivian again. She was such a cute sweet lil doll!

A freak mini-blizzard.

And some Saturday morning fencing.

Ben cleaned out gutters for Grandpa.

Super fun jamming and dessert.

We did church in the great room on Sunday morning. Somebody also had gotten out about 200 rubber bands that were in a box somewhere, and what is the most logical thing to do when you have lots of rubber bands and everybody is going stir crazy? The solution is pretty clear:) And when Katie just happens to be taking a nap at the moment because she milked at 5:00, it's pretty tempting to use her face as target practice. The first time she got hit she woke up and said that the next person that hit her would be getting tackled and be given a noogie. So of course, Jacob promptly hit her in the face again, so she went ahead and tackled him and gave him a noogie.

There are not many pictures, but the next ten were complete rubber band mayhem. Jacob and Katie both had welts on their faces by the time they were done. Josh was taking a few safety precautions with his swim goggles.

Flowers from Kiowa for Grandma.

Levi's and Jesse's came over on Sunday night for supper and the evening.

We thought that this needed to be documented, since now that Jason is almost 5 weeks old, Ben is just now holding him for the first time.

Kiowa is pretty thrilled with her cousin.

Flint thought he was super cool in Grandma's shoes.

The next Wednesday we had Joelle, and she got to help make chili.

I had my boots out since I was about to leave, so she went ahead and wore them for a bit.

Josh had Legos out, and built this cool ship.

Levi brought Kiowa and Flint over for the evening on Friday night since Echo had plans with her sisters. They LOVED the Legos. And yes there is an extra girl in the picture, because Kinsey came over to stay the night.

Saturday morning, we did some kitchen work for Mom.

Dad and the boys have been doing a lot of work in the timber lately, clearing brush and cutting down dead trees. So now we have even more firewood.

Sunday  night, all the kids came over again. And yes, Legos are still very fun even if you're an adult! Jesse built a crabbing boat (that was actually pretty realistic), and Levi built some sort of ship. Ben built a telehandler/crane thingy. And in the time that it took Jesse and Levi to build their huge boats, Jacob built a UFO (a flat gray Lego platform with neon green thingy's stuck into it).

Flint was hovering nearby just waiting for somebody to leave so he could take possession of and "play" with their machine.

Books are always a highlight for these two cuties.

Jesse showing off his crabbing boat.

Jason is one well-loved little guy around here!

This was probably Monday morning, and Josh rototilled the garden.
