March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

Welcome Winter....Or Not

We woke up to this on Thursday morning.

Somebody was really wishing she had put her car in the shed overnight.

Just for reference: this was Monday, October 1.

Thursday, October 31.

How's that for summer and winter in one month???!!

Well, so it looked relatively still outside, like the snow was done coming down, so I went ahead and did my Walmart pickup and a few other errands in Morton.
Mistake.
More snow came, temps tanked, the wind picked up, and I lost track of how many cars I saw in ditches. Thankfully it was no one I knew and I made it home safely....but barely! Our driveway was a sheet of ice and, after I missed hitting the mailbox by a mere 6 inches, I decided that was close enough and I could walk the rest of the way home.

Mumbling something about physics concepts and women drivers, Ben had no problem backing up the van and bringing it right up the driveway. And he didn't even come close to the mailbox.
He really is my hero.

Ha, but a few minutes later the mail lady slid around like a sled on an ice rink trying to get her little half-a-jeep turned around. Made me feel not-quite-so-bad about my ineptness. Seriously I think women drivers aren't anything to brag about and should just stay home on icy days. And someone else should do their errands for them. Any volunteers :)????

Cows must have their fuel to stay warm when it's 28d, you know, so thus begins the daily chore of taking hay across the road.

Friday was so cold and windy. Was really odd to see so many leaves falling and landing on the snow.

Also unusual to see harvest equipment in the snow.

By late afternoon, most snow was gone. Thankfully! I'm not ready for winter quite yet.

And that's the last picture I took!

I forgot to take px last night when Jacob and Ben did some room rearrangement for me and this morning when five girls were in the kitchen working on tyg invite food prep. And I'm not going to be at the invite tonight, but am hoping for some px from one of my girls. The theme is "Blessed Are The Persecuted" and I've been amazed and thankful at all the work these kids (not only our kids but the entire committee) have done in research and preparation for this event. I'm so glad they are passionate about not only praying for the persecuted church but also spreading their passion to others who might not be as aware of it. I know when I was their age I didn't even know it existed. True, the world wasn't nearly as connected back then; but even the little we did hear about was viewed (at least by me) as being isolated incidents that really didn't affect me in my rosy little American AC bubble. Little did I know that there is more persecution then (30 years ago) and today of Christians than ever before in history. The Church is under attack, and, although we have freedom to worship here in America and are daily thankful for that, we are truly the exception and not the norm. My prayer is that hearts will be touched tonight and many more young believers will purpose to pray for and reach out to the persecuted church; I pray that they will dig into their Christian walk more seriously and strive more fervently to serve Jesus Christ every day. I also hope this evening will inspire them to look at their problems a little differently. When I read a Voice of the Martyrs newsletter, I have to re-calibrate my daily issues and struggles. Driving in bad weather and getting few apples from 50 apple trees really isn't a big deal at all. Neither are sick kids and sleepless nights and tired aching feet. Nor muddy floors and messy rooms.
Really, do I have anything to complain about? Ever?
In light of the church bombings in Indonesia last year;
and the imprisoned pastors in Indonesia, Eritrea, Syria, Nigeria, and countless other nations;
and the North Korean Christian woman who lost her 3-year-old and 18-month-old children when her Communist husband divorced her;
and countless widows in restricted nations whose pastor husbands gave their lives for the gospel of Jesus Christ - - -
In light of this, I definitely do not have anything to complain about.
Oh Lord, forgive me when I do.

Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them.
