March 2024

March 2024
Over the years, we've always compared our family life to a wagon train heading west. Just as everyone had to do his part to get to Oregon years ago, so everyone in our family must do his/her part to make our journey through life successful. If somebody climbs in the wagon and lets the others do the work, we just don't make any progress. We all have to pull our weight and work together. Along the trail we find lots of pebbles that make for a smooth ride and some bigger rocks that jar us a little; we hit the occasional pothole that can slow us down. But if we purpose to search diligently, there are countless gold nuggets and precious gemstones along the way as well. This journal is an attempt to preserve some of those precious moments for our children, and our children's children, as together we travel this trail called life.

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11

6-17-15 Big Boy

I don’t remember when this picture was taken – probably during a rainy afternoon. Or a hot&humid one. We’ve had plenty of both lately, it seems.

Evening walk with Dad was beautiful a few days ago.

Saturday afternoon turned out to be perfect for some lake time.

The Kaiser Zoo has been re-organized by the next generation and is now home to a new generation of snakes, turtles, frogs, mice, and so on.

Sunday brought more rain, but we enjoyed our day at church anyway. Afterwards, Tim & Trish & their family joined us for the annual Turkey Festival parade, and then we headed to the fellowship hall for a wonderful evening of food, fellowship, and singing with our Princeville church. And I do mean wonderful. The singing was simply beautiful. The second singing was too. Truly a blessed evening.

Monday was the annual Schmidgall Day Camp, with A. Joyce keeping all of A. Marj’s grandkids for the day so she and her girls could shop ‘til they dropped. Our kids were invited to help and play and thoroughly enjoyed their day. With rain in the morning and in the forecast for the afternoon, we weren’t sure we would get any lake time, but thankfully the rain held off and we saw lots of happy smiles!

No, Kate didn’t let go of Lola, although Lola wanted to drop into the water like the big kids did. We weren’t too sure how that would work out, so we told Lola she couldn’t go unless her daddy was here to go with her. Anytime, Timothy!!

The other kids did great! Here’s Amy -

Landry was impressed with Drew too but thought he’d wait a year to try it.

Don’t ask me why they’re fascinated with critters.

Because I don’t know. It’s beyond my comprehension.

Josh’s newest pet. Way more my speed although don’t make me touch it.

More rain this morning, overcast most of day. I’ve never seen anything like it, this rain after rain after rain after rain in the middle of hot humid June. As rains continue, our once-beautiful garden is looking less and less beautiful. Can’t rotor-till mud!! Well sooner or later things will dry out, and then we’ll have a few big garden days and get things back to rights. Meanwhile, I’m glad to be getting a few projects done. Patching, altering, cleaning, organizing, etc. My crew helped with this closet this morning – it’s been bugging me for weeks. Such a mess!!!  I open it now and have to smile. It looks so nice. I know, I’m weird.

P1070369

That’s it. Enjoy your day!!

6-11-15 Rain Lake Cats Rassi Day

How’s that for a title? Smile

Sunday morning brought us this beautiful promise of a storm, which of course we all enjoyed thoroughly. The 1.5” rain was nice too.

P1070104

I was home with some littles who weren’t feeling well, but the rest of the crew enjoyed a blessed day at church. After church, Dad & I walked, and then the next storm blew in. We just had time to fit in a water drive (that would be a drive to check out the water, of course) before supper. I think we got another 2.4” or so which wasn’t the most around by a long shot.

Full ditches everywhere.

On to lake pictures – this was Monday.

P1070149

First thing – a nice little snapper. Which, sadly, escaped back to the lake. Where he will happily grow and grow and grow and grow. Confused smile

P1070151

Lake water was pretty cold after all the rain,

P1070156

but the rainwater in this boat was nice and warm Smile.

P1070158

Tuesday was another lake day. The kids had a blast with ASK on Jesse’s paddleboard, and then again when Samuel & Kinsey came out for awhile.

P1070164

Cats.

P1480698

Seriously, cats are loved around here. I only used a few of the dozens and dozens of pictures on the camera, mostly taken by Josh and Jewel.

Last night we enjoyed another whopper of a storm, 1.5” worth again. Okay I think we’re ok for rain for awhile but what do I know? Trees down and power out until noon today Confused smile. Just when I was getting a little nervous because the refrigerators were almost room temperature, the lights came back on, what a relief!

And today we enjoyed a few little Rassis here. And since the lake was prime and the weather was prime, it was a prime time to head to Dave’s Pond again. I think it’s safe to say all involved had a good time. I certainly couldn’t count all the smiles!

 P1070167

Recognize this little feller? Ben’s pretty sure he’s the one that got away. And if you hold him too close to your pbj - - - well, he’ll just take a bite!

Kate caught this pretty little frog,

which lived in this pool for a little while.

So that’s what we’ve been up to lately. Enjoying our summer immensely, wishing it would go a little more slowly. Garden looks good. Apples look good (except for the ones the storm blew down last night Sad smile). Peaches look good (ditto Sad smile). Kate and Ben have been doing some shed maintenance – lots of painting. They even let Sarah, Jewel, & Josh on the hogshed roof to paint a little. Not sure what I was doing then, but I’ve not been doing well at pictures lately. At any rate, sheds look good. New strawberries look good. Garden crew has been busy. Hopefully I’ll get a few px to post in the next few days . . .

Meanwhile - - -

That’s all, folks.
